Not everyone is destined to achieve love.
I had always carried those words with me in my heart until I met Ashwini.
Ashwini is slowly stealing my heart which I am afraid to reciprocate back.
My heart only beats for Aishwarya and no one else but when Ashwini came along, the walls I had built around me collapsed.
Ashwini reminds me a lot of Aishwarya and that’s why even if she offends me, I will easily forgive her even if it hurts me.
There is one voice that keeps echoing in my ears, there is one face that keeps coming in front of me every night, Aishwarya. She was the peace of my heart and now, Ashwini is taking her place. I can’t stop my heart but I can stop myself because falling in love is my death.
I had been busy after the conversation I had with Ashwini boyfriend, I told my father to lie that I was not around when she came and was surprised when I saw her again. I have been keeping tabs on Khan and he had visited a house earlier today and that same house is the one Ashwini had taken me to.
Imagine my surprise when I saw auntie Mehek in flesh and blood.
After surviving that horrible night, growing up, I had changed a lot that even Khan won’t recognize me when he sees me. That small kid has grown. It was as if the creator was on my side that he made my enemies not to recognize me that easily.
I was very sure, hundred percent sure, that auntie Mehek died along with Aishwarya.
She was hit on her head and she fell down. She did not get up from the ground even when they burnt the house.
I saw everything, she died so how come am I seeing her in this same house Khan visited a few hours ago?
I had to stop myself from reaching out to touch her and check if she is real.
What if she is someone who just looks like her? No, she was surprised when I told her my name.
So how had she survived?
“Ashwini, can you go to your room, I need to talk to your friend privately, please.” Auntie Mehek’s voice brought me back to reality.
“Mum, I want to be here and hear whatever you are discussing with him.”
“Please, just do as I say, I just want to be sure of something. I will tell you whatever we discussed.”
“Promise you will tell me everything mum.”
“I promise.” Auntie Mehek said and we both watched Ashwini as she climbed the stairs until she disappeared from our sight.
“How did you manage to survive the fire auntie Mehek?” I asked.
“I survived. I thought you were killed Rohan, when I woke up, I realize the penthouse was on fire and-”
Interrupting her softly.
“And Aishwarya died, I couldn’t save her auntie Mehek. I failed her, I failed the one who had truly loved me and was punished for it.”
“What do you mean you were punished for it Rohan?”
“You needed to see the way Aishwarya was treated that night auntie Mehek, they beat her turn by turn, that most times, I have horrible dreams about it. And I couldn’t do anything at all to save her. They burned me thinking I would die but I didn’t.” I replied, cutting the part where I had met the angel who gave me a second chance to live. “I survived too.” I added.
Auntie Mehek nodded her head.
“How did you survive auntie Mehek?” I asked again.
“There was a secret passageway Aishwarya’s mother had shown me before she died. The penthouse was built for her so I used that to escape.”
“So how did you come to live here? I never knew you had a grown-up daughter auntie Mehek.” I said remembering Ashwini.
Auntie Mehek laughed a little, “That isn’t my daughter Rohan.”
“But Ashwini called you mother.” I told her. I heard it with my ears.
“She did.” Auntie Mehek said and moved closer to me, placing her palm on my shoulder. “Rohan, Ashwini is actually Aishwarya.”
No fucking way. I shifted back a little which made her hand to let go of my shoulder as I stared at her with unbelievable eyes.
“That’s impossible auntie Mehek. Aishwarya died right In front of my eyes. They hit her multiple times, her eyes were lifeless.” I said. No, she is mistaken. “And besides, she doesn’t even look like Aishwarya.”
“Rohan, I had to change her face so that Lady Meera and the king’s won’t be able to recognize her. Ashwini is truly Aishwarya.”
“No, I can’t believe that.” I said closing my eyes. It’s very hard to believe.
“The only person who knows her real identity is the doctor who had performed the surgery on her, doctor Amol.”
At the mention of my senior colleague’s name, I opened my eyes. I will have to ask Doctor Amol when I see him on Monday.
“To be sincere with you Rohan, Aishwarya was dead when I had regained consciousness, so I had to do something her late mother had told me. Do you believe in magic?” She asked me.
I could have said no, but I remember how I had survived so I nodded my head to her question.
“Yes auntie Mehek, I believe in magic. But what has that got to do with how Ashwini is Aishwarya?”
“Her mother was a witch and she showed me a secret passageway and told me only to come there if Aishwarya was in trouble. I did and it healed her.”
I can’t believe this. My Aishwarya is still alive, my Aishwarya is Ashwini.
I had to sit down to digest the breaking news.
Will I still die now that I just found out that the woman I love is alive?
“Rohan, when she woke up, she couldn’t remember who she was anymore.”
“That’s because they hit her head so many times.” I said. A flash of that night came to my head.
“No, I don’t think that did it. The magic healed her and brought her back to life Rohan, it wouldn’t have wiped out her memories.”
“But it did, she lost her memories.” No wonder she couldn’t recognize me when we met, but then again, no one recognized me unless I introduced myself.
“No Rohan, the magic was able to bring her back to life but not her memories, it’s like a puzzle we have to fix.”
“How do you mean?”
“Ashwini told me when she is with you, she does see her younger self and you, but she didn’t know it was her because the image that comes to her is blurry.” Auntie Mehek responded. “Now I get it!” She exclaimed all of a sudden.
“You get what?”
“The magic did it’s own part Rohan, I think you are the final puzzle to fix her, to bring back her memories.”
I would do anything to bring Aishwarya memories back but I don’t know how to do that.
“Auntie Mehek, I don’t know ho-” I paused as a thought suddenly came to me.
Unless……the penthouse, where it all begins.
I opened my mouth to tell her that when we heard the horn of a car and the gate opening.
