“You okay?” John asked. “You’ve been more quiet since we got back”

I nodded slowly. “I saw him” I mumbled. “He spoke to me”

“What?” He stopped putting the groceries away and looked at me. “You saw Joshua in the store, when?”

“When I want to the bathroom, I wanna open it” I said quickly referring to the gift that was sitting in front of me.

“Valentina you shouldn’t” He continued to put things away. “It’ll make you miss him”

“I missed him as soon as I saw him” I whined. “He looked so sad, he said he was miserable without me”

“He treated you bad you can’t just forgive him”

“I know. I don’t want too”

“But you are and you need to stop”

He’s right but he doesn’t understand how Joshua made me feel. He made me happy and excited. I felt like a kid. I felt like how I never had before. I was happy… well up until yesterday.

“It’s so hard, how do I do this?” I looked up at John.

“It’ll take some time”

“I just don’t see myself without him, I can’t believe I let it go this far. How did I not see this coming?”

He leaned over the counter and spoke softly. “You never did tell me what happened”

I sighed and reached for the bag on the counter. “I went into his office and he had papers on his desk”

“You went through his stuff?” He asked.

“No, I just read the papers that were sitting on the desk and it was nonsense about a sex contract”

He frowned and looked at me. “I don’t understand, what do you mean?”

I looked at him. “Exactly what I said, and when I asked him about it he got mad and didn’t answer my questions… we got into an argument and here I am now”

“So… He was having sex with other girls?”

“That what I think”

“Wow, I thought he was just flat out calling you out your name”

“Well, when we argued he did”

“Did he apologize?”

“I don’t remember hearing it, everything is blurry from that night”

He sighed and rubbed his head. “I hate to say this but I think you need to talk to him. Get the whole truth” I sighed as he continued talking. “You don’t know his reasoning for the sex contract but that doesn’t excuse his actions for calling you those things” I nodded slowly listening closely to the things he said. “I think you should open it”

I pulled the bag in my lap for slowly began to go through it. It was a sleek silver bag that was big and pretty. I pulled out a rectangle wrapped up in paper and kept digging. I pulled out a card.

“Open that” he said pointing to the card.

I quickly looked at him then ripped off the paper enclosing the card.

On the front there was a picture of a gold heart.
I opened it and money fell out. I placed it on the table and began to read out loud.

“My dearest Valentina” I stopped and looked at John, he was counting the money. I continued. “I should be punished for the way I have been treating you…”

“I’m already bored” John said putting the money down. “It’s 2 grand”

“I’ll read it later” I said and put the money back in the card and the card back in the bag.

I unwrapped the rectangle and I already knew what it was before I saw the picture.

“An Iphone?” John said. “Well he did break your other one”

He keeps giving me gifts. This is not what I want. I want him to be honest with me, tell me the truth. That’s more important to me than a phone.

“It’s an eight” he said.

“Aw” I groaned. “I don’t want an eight”

“What?” He laughed. “It’s popular and it’s nice”

“No headphone jack” I pouted.

“Lemme take it out”

“No! I’m not keeping it” I pulled out the card again, holding it in my hand.

“What else is in here?”

“I don’t know I didn’t look”

He reached inside the bag and pulled out a pair of car keys. He looked at me shocked. “A car?” He asked.

I shook my head and stood up.

“What does the card say?” He asked.

I opened it and read through it quickly. “He apologies and says he wants to meet me for dinner to talk”

“Jeez you’ve got quite the boyfriend”

“He’s not my boyfriend”

“He gave you money, a phone, and possibly a car and you don’t want to claim him. He’s obviously mad over you”

“You don’t even like him! Why are you defending him?” I got loud.

“Valentina, in all the years I have known you you’ve never had things as nice as this!”

“Money isn’t everything. He can’t buy my love”

“But he bought you!” He yelled. “He bought your virginity, he gave you everything you could ever want!”

“Everything my mother wanted, I didn’t want to do this you know I didn’t!”

“But you did”

“Why does everyone keep saying that?” I slammed the card down and walked into the bedroom. “Don’t you think I know that? I have to live with myself knowing that. My mother was dying, she needed that money” I pointed at him when I saw he followed me. “You out of all people know that!”

He sighed as shook his head. “I know, I know Valentina. I’m sorry I said that”

“I’m not a whore!” I yelled. I felt my tears fall down my face. Everyone I love thinks I’m a whore.

“I know” he moved closer.
“I’m not a whore” I said again. I don’t want it to be true. I did this for my mother, I swear I did and nothing else. I didn’t plan on falling for him.

“You’re not a whore” he said quietly. “I just… I’m sorry”

“The money’s not important to me, I want to be happy”

“You’ve never had true happiness and now he’s giving it to you in bundles of cash, yet you won’t spoil yourself with that money”

“I don’t want to spoil myself with vacations and clothes and jewelry, those things don’t make me happy”

“Then what does?”

“Being with you and your family” my voice cracked. “And Joshua, and his family was nice”

“I’m so sorry” he hugged me.

“I’m just tired of not being happy but I don’t wanna give up” I let go of him and sat on the bed.

I’ll go talk to Joshua but I won’t let him win me over that easy.
