“Finally!” I said. “I can’t believe he let me out the house! I love him but these two weeks have been crazy!”
John nodded as he rolled down the window. He hates when I talk about Joshua to much. “Big deal all we’re doing is going to the doctor”
“That’s what he thinks, you and I are going to spend some quality time together” I truly missed John. I never told him about what happened with Leticia and I think it’s better off I didn’t. He’s blame everything on Joshua and try to beat him up and that would just be bad.
“Really?” He asked doubtfully. “No bullsh*t?”
“What do you mean?” I laughed. As I pulled into a Wendy’s.
“He’s not going to rip you away from me?”
“No” I said as we got out. “No one can ever come in between you and I”
“Good Valentina” he looked at me. “I’m really glad you said that”
“Hi welcome to Wendy’s what can I get you?”
I turned my attention toward the cashier and told him what I wanted. “Your turn” I said to John.
“Uh, can get a four for four please?” He said all manly.
“Yup that’ll be $8. 22”
I pulled out my card but John beat me to it. I looked at him and shook my head as I watched him pay.
“I always pay when we’re going out” he smirked at me.
“What a gentleman” I said sarcastically. We grabbed our food and walked out.
“What time do you have to be at the doctor?”
“9” I said chewing on my chicken nuggets. “It’s right down the street”
“Let’s go it’s almost 9”
“Don’t rush me Mr. Rushy pants”
He laughed. “Mr. Rushy pants?”
“Yea” I said pulling out the Wendy’s. “Cause you always rush me”
“Cute”
–
“Valentina Matrix?” An old woman called my name in the waiting room.
I hate coming to the doctor. It’s smells like furniture and latex. “She called you” John tapped me.
“Come with me” I said like a child.
I will admit I’m scared. Every time I come to the doctor I get bad news and I don’t want bad news.
I stood up and John followed closely behind me.
“Follow me, Miss” the old lady said. She hobbled her way toward an open door and walked inside.
“You can stay in here, My name is Sarah. If you need anything please let me know” she smiled. Her wrinkles gathered at her eyes and her cheeks. “The nurse is on her way”
“Thank you” I said and she closed the door behind her.
A few minutes later. The nurse came in and checked me. She took my vitals, weight, height and drew my blood. When she was finished she told me to wait for the doctor.
I sighed and rubbed my arm where the bandaid was. I hate needles. I had to hold John’s hand for that part.
“You okay?” John rubbed my lower back.
“Yea” I took a deep breath. “I’m scared, what is she gonna say?”
“You’ll be fine Valentina. You’ve been taking your medicine”
“What if she bumps up my dosage?”
He looked at the ground rubbed his face with his hand. “I don’t think that’ll happen” he said still looking down. I know he’s lying.
“But what if it does?” My voice cracked. “You know what’ll happen”
“Stop you can’t think like that”
“John I don’t want to die”
He grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “You are not going to die”
I turned my head away from him and bit my lip so I didn’t cry.
“There is always another option” John’s voice wavered a bit. He cleared his throat. “Surgery” I closed my eyes and sniffed.
“Lets just see what she has to say, okay”
I looked up and him and nodded. “Mmhmm”
The door knob twisted and my doctor opened the door. “Valentina” she smiled. “It’s been a while”
“Yea”
“How are you?”
“I’m good”
“You’ve been feeling good, no pain?”
“None”
“That’s good” she sat on the stool and rolled from her computer to me. “I’ve analyzed your blood and your iron levels are low, I want you to eat lean meats for the next few weeks to bring that up” I nodded. “I also… don’t want to recommend surgery, I know that risks are high. But if I bump your dosage it’ll just make you weaker and weaker, it won’t be much of living”
I knew it. I knew this was going to happen. I took a deep breath and rubbed my sweaty palms on my jeans and tired to blink away tears.
“I know, we’ve been fighting this for a long time but know we’ve got to act. I’d hate to shove surgery down your throat but I do think that this is the best option. Despite the risk, we can get rid of this all together”
I shook my head. “But in-spite of the risk, I could die”
“We can try bumping up your dosage to give you time to think about it, but you’re young Valentina. You have your whole life ahead of you. It’s been twenty four long years of just containing this disease, it’s time to eradicate it all together”
I wiped my eyes and nodded once again. “I’ll give you one week, but after that I want you back here with a decision”
Another thing to think about. “Okay, thank you”
She stood and hugged me. “I’ll see next Thursday”
She walked out and left me and John in the room by ourselves. I’m not going to cry, it’s okay, I’m okay. I can hold it in.
I took a deep breath and tried to keep a confident face while avoiding looking at John.
“I know what you’re trying to do”
“Please don’t” I swallowed the oncoming tears.
“Don’t hold it in” He lifted my chin with his hand and looked in my eyes. “It’s okay”
“I didn’t think it was this bad” I laughed. “This is bad, things are bad!” I jumped down from the table I was sitting on and began to walk out the door.
“Just wait” he stopped me. “Everything will be okay”
“John stop trying to see the brighter side of things”
“Hold on, V, let’s think!” he shouted.
“What’s there to think about?” I said quietly. I said close to the door away from John.
“Well did you tell Joshua?”
I didn’t say anything. I forgot all about Joshua for a while. I didn’t even call him like he asked me too. That’s when the tears started coming.
They stuck to my face as they fell. “No” I said quickly. “He can’t know, you can’t tell him”
“He needs to know”
“Why does he? It won’t change anything!” I said loudly. “It’s not going to change the fact that I am going to die!” I sobbed.
He walked toward me. “Don’t” I put my hand out. “Come on, I’ll take you home” I said as I opened the door.
We walked down the hall in silence, in the elevator in silence and got into the car silent. Everything’s bad, there’s no hope for anything. I’m just like my mother now. I’m miserable and alone, I’m deteriorating inside and there’s nothing I can do.
I’m going to die without ever getting married, without ever having kids, without achieving my dreams. But I’ll dream forever when I’m dead.
