✍️ Thirty – Nine✍️
John left and it was just me and Valentina. After they went upstairs to talk and I paced the floor trying to find something to eat and I’ve been here ever since. It’s 6 o’clock. I haven’t eaten all day and neither has Valentina.
I go in the fridge and begin to make pancakes when I hear someone coming down the stairs.
I feel her watching me but she doesn’t say anything. I wonder if she thinks I’m mad. I’m more upset than anything, I just can’t believe she didn’t tell me a long time ago.
I see her appear out of the corner of my eye and she sits down at the table.
I didn’t look at her because I didn’t know what to say.
“Are you mad at me?” She asks.
I look at her as I stir the pancake batter. “Not at all, Valentina” I try to say nicely.
“Why did you say my name?”
“What do you mean?” I turn on the stove.
“Whenever you’re mad, you say my name at the end of your sentence”
“No I don’t” I chuckled.
“Yea you do”
“That’s not true”
It grew quiet and I could tell she wanted to talk. I do too but what do I say and how do I say it? I don’t want to be insensitive.
“Thoughts?” She finally asked. It’s like she’s reading my mind.
I took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I leaned against the counter and looked at her.
She sighed and stood up, walking over to the stove and turning the heat down. Then slicing butter and putting it in the pan.
“It was none of your concern, it wasn’t your problem. It was mine” she looked up at me. Her hazel eyes melting into a lighter color, I’ve never noticed before, her eyes change colors. “We weren’t even supposed to be together, this was supposed to be a one time thing. But it fell into something more”
She poured the pancake batter into the pan and watched it as it sizzled.
“I never planned on falling in love with you, Joshua”
“Were you ever going to tell me?”
“I didn’t really think about that, whenever I’m with you I just kind of forget about having it”
“You said you had to take medicine for it?” She nodded. “How did you do it? I never saw you”
“I’m a good hider” she smiled.
“How often do you take it?”
“Everyday”
“What happens if you miss a day?”
“I could die” I frowned at her not understanding how. “Well after 24 hours of not having the medicine in my system my body will begin to shut down. That’s how powerful this thing is”
“And you’ve had it your whole life?”
She nodded and continued flipping the pancakes. Making three at a time. “When I was little I had an infection and then when it went away it left sort of an in growth embedded under my ribcage” she shrugged it off as if it was nothing. As if this wasn’t a big deal. But it is it’s a huge f****ng deal.
“I don’t know what to say”
“Don’t say anything” she smiled her beautiful smile.
“I don’t want to loose you” I’m supposed to marry this girl.
“It’s okay, I always knew this day would come I just didn’t know it be here, with you” she finishes the rest of the pancakes and turns the stove off. “Don’t look so sad, you’re gonna make me cry” she chuckled and touched my face.
“I’m not loosing you Valentina. We can beat this”
She nodded slowly. I know she doesn’t believe that but I do, I have too.
“This is what’s supposed to happen”
“How could you say that?”
“God has a plan for all of us”
I sighed sharply and moved away from her. “And this is what His plan is” I said angrily.
“To take you away from me?!”
“We don’t always understand what He does as first but everything happens for a reason Joshua”
“I don’t understand. How could he take you away from me?!” I yelled.
“Come sit” she said moving to the table. “Eat your pancakes”
“I don’t want pancakes” I want Valentina.
“Then why did you make them?”
“I’m trying to wrap my head around all of this” I rubbed my face. I sat down and pulled her to me. “You have to get this surgery, you have too”
“Joshua-”
“You have to at least try!”
“I could die sooner than I have to”
“You won’t! You won’t, believe in your God and you won’t” She looked at the ground and frowned. I can tell she’s thinking really hard. I used a good choice of words. “Everything happens for a reason. He wants this to happen, your happiness is the reason!”
She picked up a pancake and bit into it as tears filled her eyes. “I’ll be there, John will be there, your mother if you want her” her tears fell. “Okay then we won’t have her” she chuckled while still crying. “My parents can come, we’ll all come to support you”
She swallowed the pancake and opened her mouth to speak but no words came out.
“I will never leave your side, I will never leave you” still no words came out of her mouth. “I want to be with you for a very long time, Valentina and there’s no way I can do that if you’re not here with me” I felt my eyes water.
She tried to move away from me but I pulled her to my chest. Embracing her and wrapping my arms around her, keeping her. I want to savor these moments, in case I no longer have them.
