“Hi mama” Valentina weakly smiled at her mother as she opened the door.
She started her medicine a few days ago and she’s been looking tired.
“Hi sweetheart” Her mother said smiling. Valentina walked inside and hugged her tight. “I’ve missed you”
I’m surprised. Her mother is always mean.
“How’ve you been?” Valentina asked.
“I’m doing okay” they walked into the kitchen and sat down. “Hi Joshua”
“Hello” I said while sitting down next to Valentina.
I drifted into my thoughts as they talked. Like mother like daughter. They’re both sick and they both could die yet they are so different. They aren’t bonding over their sickness like I’ve seen most people do in the articles I’ve read.
They are opposites.
I could love on Valentina all day. I could talk about her all day if I had too. How in love with her I am. How bad I want to marry her and start a family with her. I have to ask her mother for a blessing first. Or maybe I should ask John.
I wish I didn’t but it’s who I am and part of my parents religion. They believe I should so I will.
I watched Valentina as she spoke. Her mouth moved up and down quickly and when she smiles it’s something special. I want to kiss her so bad. I want to make her moan and scream my name. I want it so bad. And her rubbing my hand isn’t helping my case. I’m needing her right now.
I looked at her body. Her light brown, glowing skin shining from the sun coming in the window. She has small br—sts but the low cut of her dress makes it seems like they’re pretty big. She had a gold necklace on and it was resting right against her br–st. I looked down her arm and at her hand. She still has on the ring I gave her. I smiled a bit then I looked back at her br–sts again. She looks so good in that dress.
“Thursday?” I heard her mom say. “Wow Valentina, I didn’t think it’d come to this. I think you should do it”
Why is her mom being so nice? What does she have planned?
“Joshua thinks I should too but I’m just scared”
“How do you think I feel?” Her mom asked. “You don’t have cancer, Valentina” there she is, being mean again.
Valentina lost her smile and stopped rubbing my hand. “I know that but-”
“You are going to live the rest of your life happy and free and I’m going to die within the year”
Valentina stayed quiet and straightened her back. “But enough about me” her mother chucked. “I’m glad you’re getting the surgery” she stood up and walked to the stove. “I made cookies”
“Why do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Shut me down after everything I say”
“I only build you up”
“You never do, you never have, you’ve always discouraged everything I did”
“Then don’t get the surgery” her mother yelled. “I don’t care!” Valentina became quiet. “Now look what you’ve made me do, I’m the bad guy”
“You’ve always been the bad guy, mom, I’ve just always put up with it. I can’t anymore, I came to tell you that you have a doctors appointment on Friday” she stood up and so did I.
“I’m getting the surgery on Thursday, I might not be back. I just wanted you to know that” she headed out the door and I followed.
“Valentina don’t leave” her mom stopped her. “I have something to tell you”
Valentina looked at me. “Give us a minute”
I nodded and walked out of the house. There was a man standing on the sidewalk looking at the house.
“Can I help you?” I asked walking up to him. He had on a very expensive looking suit. It’s pretty hot today, even I’m in shorts.
He took off his glasses and looked at me. “I’m Gregory James” he shook my hand.
“Joshua Maxwell” I shook his hand back.
“Oh” he said looking at me a bit closer. “I have seen you in the newspaper.
I nodded not completely knowing what he was talking about but I changed topics. “You know, staring at someone’s house is kinda suspicious, you probably shouldn’t”
He nodded and turned away from the house looking at me. “I know I just… dazed off for a moment” I nodded and began to walk away when he said something. “I’ve got a lot of stuff on my mind”
He wants to talk. He wants to have a heart to heart conversation. I don’t, I really don’t care for what he has to say. “I’m sorry about that” I take a deep breath.
“I got my girlfriend pregnant” he blurted out.
“Oh. I’m sorry?” I looked at him and took time to notice him. He had gray hair but he looked pretty young. Kind of like John Stamos.
“No it’s not terrible news” he said slowly.
“Can you afford it?”
“Yes, I’m a doctor” he said matter-of-factually.
“Good, I’m sure she’s excited”
“She isn’t”
“Well you’re down on your luck aren’t you” I said. I’m not good at sympathy. “I’m sorry”
Valentina finally came outside, her sundress blew in the wind as she walked over to me. “Ready?” I asked.
“Yes” she said as she grinned at the man next to me.
“Nice talking with you, sir. Good luck to you”
“Yea” he answered.
I opened the passenger door for her and she climbed in slowly. Then I got in and started the car.
“What do you wanna do now babe?”
“I don’t know” she looked at me. We sat in silence for a couple more seconds and then she said. “I want to go to the beach”
“The beach?” I asked starting the car.
“Yea… the beach” I pù-lled off and out of the corner of my eye I saw her wipe her eye.
I grabbed her hand and kissed it. Trying to calm her down. Something bad always happens with her and her mother. It’s okay though, she’s old she’ll probably die soon.
