“We’re here” I said parking the car.
“Where are we?” She asked.
“A party”
“What kind of party?”
“A Father’s Day party”
I got out and jogged to the other side of the car. I opened the door for her and grabbed her hand.
She got out and I closed the door for her, when we got inside I was greeted by lots of people I knew, coworkers, friends, people who tried to betray me.
“Michael Hawthorne” I said to myself. He caught me eye as he was liked around. He helped me start my business then threw my under the bus, everyone things he’s the shit but he’s not he’s a-
“Who’s that?” Valentina asked.
“Um he’s… a guy I used to work with” I pulled as my collar.
“You look mad” she grabbed my hand.
“I’m not” I said as we walked over to our table.

“So what do we do here?” I asked as we sat down. We’ve been here for an hour or two and all that’s happened is a man on a stage talking. I tried to pay attention but it didn’t work out.
“We talk to kids with no fathers help them get control of themselves” Mr. Maxwell said nonchalantly.
“Oh” I said and looked down. Now I feel the water works coming on. I reach up and wipe my eyes before it falls out.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing” I say quickly.
“You sure?” He puts his hand on mine.
“Yea” I smiled faintly and avoid his eyes.
I looked up and there was a boy probably sixteen or seventeen with his hands in his pockets. He sat down and looked the table.
“Uh… hi” I said to him.
“Hi” he smiled.
A lady walked over to us and introduced us to this young man, she said his name was Jayvon and he lived with his mother.
“I chilled with my father a few times, it was pretty cool” Jayvon said.
I noticed the tattoos on his arms while Mr. Maxwell talked to him. They look strangely familiar, one was going across his arm and it said ‘blessed’ then another one in his wrist that said ‘J.J’
“J.J” I whispered to myself. That is what I called my… b-before… I looked up at his face and I immediately knew who he was.
I sat back and looked at the table, I felt tears sting the corners of my eyes.
“J.J?” I said interrupting Mr. Maxwell taking about internships at his business.
“How do you know that name?” Jayvon looked at me.
I stood up and walked to the bathroom. I can’t take this and I can’t say anything because I’ll ruin everything Jayvon’s been working for.
His whole life could be ruined because of me, I don’t want that to happen we may have history but I don’t want that to happen.
After washing my face and pulling myself together I walk out of the room and wonder around.
I noticed all the art on the walls and the people dressed in summer clothes. Heels click-clacking everywhere around the huge building. I was offered wine which I gladly took and sipped at it as someone approached me.
“Hi” he said as he stood next to me.
I looked at him and noticed he was kind of attractive. Maybe as equally hot as Mr. Maxwell. He smiled at me with his brown eyes and cheek bones, flattering me with his dirty blond hair.
“Hello” I said as I looked up at him.
“I’m Bradley” he held out his hand for me to shake.
“Valentina” I accepted his offer and shook his hand.
“Are you here alone?” He asked.
“No I’m not”
“Who are you here with?”
I hesitated to answer. “Mr. Maxwell”
“Ah, Joshua Maxwell” he rubbed his hands together.
“You know Mr. Maxwell?” I didn’t even know his first name.
“I do” he chuckled. “We were friends… once”
“What happened?” He had my full attention.
He looked down at me and smirked. “He stole from me”
I raised my eyebrows and asked another question. “Stole what?”
“That’s a story for another time” he shook my hand again. “It was nice meeting you, Valentina” and with that he walked away. Making me wonder what kind of thing Mr. Maxwell stole from him.
I kept wondering around and then found my way back to Mr. Maxwell and Jayvon. When I sat down Mr. Maxwell and Jayvon stood up. They said their goodbyes to each other but I refused to look at Jayvon.
“Goodbye, Valentina” he put his hand on my shoulder and then walked away. I think he remembers who I am, I can’t tell.
I stared at the table until I was pulled up suddenly by Mr. Maxwell. He dragged me out of the ballroom. “Slow down, please” I begged him. “I’m wearing heels”
He sighed and picked me up, throwing me over his shoulder.
“Ugh!” I groaned. “Please put me down”
He put me down in a place where we were half hidden from people. “What?!” I whisper-yelled.
“Why are you acting so weird?” He whisper-yelled back.
“I’m not acting weird”
“You are you- your…” He trailed off as he looked back. “We’ll talk about this later” he pulled my hand and we walked back into the the view of people and he wrapped his arm loosely around my waist. “Dr. Massey” Mr. Maxwell said as an older man approached us.
“Joshua” this old man smiled and shook his hand. “How are you?”
“I’m well, sir”
“Who is this beautiful young lady you have here?” He asked looking at me.
“Valentina, my friend” he answered for me. I scoffed but then Mr. Maxwell squeezed my waist. I smiled and put my hand on top of his.
“Yes” I said as I shook Dr. Masseys’ hand.
“Wow! A strong handshake, are you business woman?”
“You are the first person to ask me, sir. Yes, I am”
“Wow, I am astonished, most of the women here are just the mans girlfriend but you have something to live for”
“Thank you, sir”
“Now I really must be going but I do want to see you again”
“Of course how about this Saturday at our place, I’ll cook”
“Indeed, it was wonderful meeting you” he shook my hand one last time.
“Joshua” he shook Mr. Maxwells hand then walked away.
“Let’s go” he whispered in my ear.
I couldn’t wait to get in the car so he could yell at me, I’ll just love it and I’m sure he’d like to vent.
“What the hell were you thinking?” He yelled at me.
He didn’t even start the car yet. “I put myself in a wonderful situation”
“How is this wonderful? You don’t own a business”
“You never bothered to ask what I do with my spare time”
“But I know you don’t own a business”
“Well you just know everything, don’t you?” I said sarcastically. He didn’t say anything. “Are you gonna drive?”
“Are you gonna tell the truth?”
“I don’t have a business”
“I knew it”
“I didn’t want to be just like every other girl there depending on their man for money, I wanted to show him that I don’t need a man and I can be independent”
He nodded with a small grin on his face. “So, Miss Independent, how do you plan on tricking this man into thinking you own a business”
“I’m smart cookie and a smart cookie knows how to think of things on the spot, don’t doubt me, I got this”
“I don’t doubt you, baby” he looked me up and down.
“Now are you gonna drive or do I have to ask for a ride?” I smirked.
